How to Tell Real Leather From Fake: A Simple Buyer's Guide

A simple, no-nonsense guide to spotting genuine leather vs fake (PU/bonded) — smell, texture, edges and price. Know what you're paying for.

Buying a leather wallet or bag in Pakistan can be confusing. "Genuine leather," "PU leather," "pure leather," "synthetic" — the labels are everywhere, and not all of them mean what you think. Here's how to tell real leather from fake in a few seconds, so you never overpay for plastic again.

First, know the grades

Not all "real" leather is equal. From best to worst:

  • Full-grain leather — the top layer of the hide, untouched. The strongest, most natural, and it ages beautifully (develops a patina). This is what quality goods are made from.
  • Top-grain leather — sanded and refined; still real, slightly less durable.
  • Genuine leather — a confusing term. It is real leather, but usually a lower layer, often coated. Fine, but not premium.
  • Bonded leather — scraps of leather glued together with plastic. Avoid — it cracks and peels within months.
  • PU / faux / synthetic — plastic. Not leather at all, however it's labelled.

The quick tests

  1. Smell it. Real leather has a rich, natural, slightly earthy smell. Fake leather smells like plastic or chemicals.
  2. Look at the grain. Real leather has an irregular, natural grain — no two areas are identical. Fake leather has a perfectly repeating, printed pattern.
  3. Check the edges. Real leather edges look fibrous or slightly rough. Fake leather edges are smooth, sealed, or look like foam/fabric underneath.
  4. Press it. Real leather wrinkles and creases naturally when you press it, like skin. Fake stays stiff or springs back unnaturally.
  5. Feel the temperature. Real leather feels warm and soft. Fake feels cool and plasticky.
  6. The price test. Real full-grain leather has a cost floor. If a "leather" wallet is suspiciously cheap, it's almost certainly bonded or PU.

Buying online in Pakistan

You can't smell or touch a product on a website, so look for these signals instead:

  • The seller names the leather clearly (e.g. "genuine full-grain cow leather"), not just "leather."
  • Close-up photos of the grain, edges, and stitching — real makers show detail.
  • Hand-stitched construction (a sign of craftsmanship, not mass plastic production).
  • A return policy so you can check before you commit. Cash on Delivery helps here — you can inspect the piece before you pay.

The LE MESH standard

Every LE MESH wallet, card holder and handbag is made from genuine full-grain cow leather and hand-stitched in Pakistan — never bonded, never faux. Our python, croco and dotted textures are worked into real leather, so your piece ages with character instead of peeling. And with Cash on Delivery and a 7-day return, you can check the leather in your own hands before you pay.
